COMMUNICATION TRAINING WITH INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

An in-service training titled Communication with Individuals with Disabilities was held on March 31, 2026, between 15:00 and 17:00 at Troia Cultural Center, Amphitheater A.

During the training, Disability Unit Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sinan Kalkan emphasized the purpose of the program by stating: As the disability unit coordination, we emphasize that disability lies not within the individual but in the environment, and that arrangements making social norms inclusive eliminate barriers. Within the university context, the access to education for individuals with various types of disabilities, such as visual, physical, or autism, must be evaluated; communication issues in student-teacher and administrative processes can only be resolved through approaches specific to the type of disability. Essential principles include describing the environment fully for the visually impaired, communicating face-to-face and in writing with the hearing impaired, using simple and structured explanations for those with intellectual disabilities, and respecting routines without forcing eye contact in cases of autism. Avoiding condescending expressions and maintaining a natural, individual-centered communication based on the principles of human first and ask first, respect first is the guarantee of the right to benefit from equal opportunities.
